How the Story begins

There was sand and rock as far as anyone could see. This is true, and the Qur’an tells it. It is the story of the Prophet Musa, peace be upon him, and his people, and the wonderful gifts Allah gave them in a dry land: water from a rock, shade from the clouds, and food from the sky. It is a story about Allah’s gifts, and about saying thank you. Let’s begin.

Allah had saved Musa and the Children of Israel from Pharaoh. He had made a dry path for them through the sea, and they had crossed safely to the other side. Allah says in the Qur’an: Children of Israel, We saved you from your enemy. Now they were free! But ahead of them lay a long journey through a wide, dry land.

The land was wide and dry, with sand and rocks stretching far away. In the daytime the sun shone hot and bright. There were no towns, no farms and no markets. And there were so many people, whole families, old and young. How would they all find water to drink, and food to eat? There was nobody to ask for help, except the One who had already saved them.
