How the Story begins
Where the two seas meet, a little fish slipped into the water. This is a true story. It comes from the Qur’an, in Surah Al-Kahf, and our Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, told us even more about it. It is the story of the Prophet Musa, peace be upon him, and a long journey he made to learn from a wise servant of Allah. It is a story about knowledge, about patience, and about trusting Allah when we do not understand.
Our Prophet told us how it began. One day, Musa stood up to speak to his people, the Children of Israel. Someone asked him, “Who is the most knowledgeable of all people?” Musa answered, “I am.” But Allah gently taught Musa that he should have said, Allah knows best. So Allah told him that there was a servant of His, at the place where the two seas meet, who knew things that Musa did not know.
Musa wanted very much to meet this servant and learn from him. He asked Allah how he could find him. Allah told him to take a fish with him in a basket. Wherever he lost the fish, there he would find the man. So Musa set off, with a young helper named Yusha. Musa said, “I will not stop until I reach the place where the two seas meet, even if I have to travel for years.”
