How the Story begins

Imagine warm sand, rocky hills, and no water at all. This is a true story. It comes from the Qur’an, and from the words of our Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him. It is the story of a brave mother named Hajar, and her baby boy, Ismail, who grew up to be a prophet, peace be upon him. It is also the story of a very special water called Zamzam, which is still flowing today. Let’s find out together.

Hajar was part of the family of the Prophet Ibrahim, peace be upon him, and the mother of his son Ismail. One day, Ibrahim brought Hajar and baby Ismail to a valley in Makkah. Ismail was still a tiny baby, so small that his mother was still feeding him. In those days, nobody lived in Makkah at all. There were no houses and no gardens. There was no water. There were only rocky hills, warm sand, and a big empty sky.

Ibrahim had them sit down under a tree, near the place where the Ka’bah would one day stand. He left them a leather bag with some dates in it, and a small water skin with some water. Then Ibrahim turned, and began to walk back the way he had come. Hajar watched him go. Where was he going? Why was he leaving them here?
