Three Men and the Rock

6 min · Ages 7–12 · Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

A big round boulder blocks a cave mouth while warm amber light shines through the gaps around it.

Three men hurry into a cave to shelter from the rain, and a huge rock blocks the way out. Each man asks Allah for help by a good deed he did only for Allah, and little by little the rock moves until they are free. The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, tells this true story, and it teaches us to do good even when no one sees.

The Moral · Honesty

The third man gave his worker every one of the animals that had grown from the rice, and kept nothing. He was honest when nobody would ever have found out.

How the Story begins

Rain was falling, and three men hurried into a cave. The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, told this true story himself. It happened long, long ago, to three men who lived before his time. His companion Abdullah ibn Umar heard him tell it, and it is kept safe for us in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim. Let’s listen.

Three men were travelling together. We do not know their names, or exactly where they lived, because the Prophet did not tell us those things. They are not what matters in this story. What matters is what these three men had once done, quietly, when they thought that no one but Allah could see.

As they travelled, the rain began to fall, and night was coming. Up ahead, in the side of a mountain, they saw a cave. So the three men hurried inside, out of the rain and the dark, glad to have found somewhere dry to shelter for the night. Outside, the rain pattered on the rocks.
