Abu ’Umayr and His Little Bird
6 min · Ages 4–12 · Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, is kind to a little boy named Abu 'Umayr and always asks about his little bird. Even a tiny bird matters to him, because it matters to a child.
The Prophet often asked little Abu ’Umayr about his bird, and when it died, he came close and talked with him about it. Children’s feelings matter.

How the Story begins
The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, often asked a little boy about his little bird. This is a true story about how kind he was to children. It comes from the books of hadith, and it was told by Anas, who lived close to the Prophet and helped him for many years. Let’s begin.
In the city of Madinah there lived a boy called Anas. When the Prophet came to live in Madinah, Anas was still young. His stepfather took him by the hand, brought him to the Prophet, and said: Messenger of Allah, Anas is a sensible boy. Let him serve you. And from then on, Anas helped the Prophet, at home and on journeys, for many years.
Anas had a little brother. He was very small, a little one who had not long stopped drinking his mother’s milk, Anas thought. Everyone called this little boy by a special name: Abu ’Umayr. It was a grown-up kind of name, the kind of name usually given to fathers. Perhaps it made him feel very big and important!
