6 min · Ages 4–12 · Prophet Muhammad ﷺ · Free Story

A camel stands on sand beside a tree where a small mother bird rests by her nest.

The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, comforts a sad camel and helps a worried mother bird, and he tells of a man who gives water to a thirsty dog. These true hadith teach us to be gentle and merciful to every living thing. Even a small kindness, like a bowl of water, counts with Allah.

The Moral · Kindness

The Prophet comforted a sad camel, and he told us about a man who gave a thirsty dog water from his shoe. Allah sees every kindness, even the very small ones.

How the Story begins

Three animals needed kindness, and tonight we will hear a true story about each one. They come from the words of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, and of the people who were with him, kept safe for us in the books of hadith. They are about a sad camel, a worried mother bird, and a very thirsty dog. Let’s begin.

The first story was told by Abdullah, the son of Ja’far. One day, Abdullah was riding behind the Prophet on his animal. They came to a garden of date palms that belonged to a man from the Ansar, the Muslims of Madinah. The Prophet went into the garden. It was shady there, and green, and the palm leaves rustled softly in the breeze.

In that garden there was a camel. And when the camel saw the Prophet, it began to make a soft, sad, longing sound, and tears ran from its eyes. Have you ever seen an animal that looked sad? Maybe a dog with its head down, or a cat that would not eat? This camel was very sad indeed.
