How the Story begins
Two friends hid in a mountain cave. This is a true story. It comes from the Qur’an, and from the words of people who were there, kept safe for us in the books of hadith. It is the story of a long journey, a hidden cave, and two best friends: the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, and his dear friend, Abu Bakr. Let’s begin.
In Makkah, many people did not want to hear the message of Islam, and the Muslims there had a very hard time. Then the Prophet told the Muslims that he had been shown, in a dream, the place they would move to: a land of date palms, between two stretches of dark, stony ground. That land was the city of Madinah.
So, little by little, many Muslims set off for Madinah. Abu Bakr wanted to go too. But the Prophet said to him: Wait a while, because I hope that I will be given permission to go as well. So Abu Bakr waited, so that he could travel with the Prophet. And while he waited, he got two camels ready, feeding them with leaves from the trees, for four whole months.
