Read! The First Revelation
7 min · Ages 4–12 · Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
In the city of Makkah, the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, goes to a little cave called Hira to worship Allah. There the very first words of the Qur'an come to him: Read! His wife Khadijah comforts him, and the Qur'an begins to come down to him a little at a time.
When Muhammad came home afraid, Khadijah listened, stayed close and reminded him of all the good in him. She told him that he told the truth and helped the poor.
Try today: When someone you love feels scared, stay close and listen to them.
How the Story begins
It all began with one word: Read! This is a true story. It comes from the Qur’an, and from the words of the Prophet’s family, kept safe for us in the books of hadith. It is the story of the very first time the Qur’an came down from Allah. It is the story of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, and of how a great message began. Let’s listen together.
Long ago, in the city of Makkah, there lived a man called Muhammad. Allah had not yet sent him the message. But already he was good and kind. He was good to his relatives. He told the truth. He helped the poor. He welcomed guests generously, and he helped people when trouble came to them. We know this because his wife, Khadijah, said so, and she knew him better than anyone.
Then something special began to happen. When Muhammad slept, he saw good dreams, and every one of them came true, as clear as the bright light of morning. And Allah made him love to be alone, away from the noise of the busy city, in a quiet place where he could worship Allah in peace.
