The Night Journey
7 min · Ages 4–12 · Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
One night, the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, travels from Makkah to Jerusalem and then up through the heavens, where the prophets before him welcome him. There Allah gives him and his people the gift of the five daily prayers.
Allah gave the Prophet the five daily prayers on the night of the journey, and made them light for us because He is kind.

How the Story begins
The prayers we pray each day were given on one special night. This is a true story, and one of the most amazing of all. It comes from the Qur’an, and from the words of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, kept safe for us in the books of hadith. It is the story of a journey he made by night: far across the earth, and then high up into the heavens. Let’s begin.
One night, the Prophet was resting near the Ka’bah in Makkah. Allah sent the angel Jibril to him, and an animal was brought for him to ride. It was called the Buraq. The Buraq was white, bigger than a donkey and smaller than a mule. And each step it took reached as far as its eyes could see!
The Prophet rode on the Buraq, and that night he travelled all the way from the Sacred Mosque in Makkah to the Furthest Mosque, al-Aqsa, in Jerusalem. Allah tells us about it in the Qur’an. Glory be to the One who took His servant on a journey by night, from the Sacred Mosque to the Furthest Mosque, whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him some of Our signs.
