The Man with Two Gardens

6 min · Ages 4–12

Two grape trellis gardens fenced by tall date palms with a blue river flowing between them.

In Surah Al-Kahf, Allah gives an example about a man with two beautiful gardens and a river flowing between them. The man boasts and forgets that Allah gave him everything, while his friend, who has less, remembers Allah and tells him to say MashaAllah. The story teaches us to be thankful and not to boast.

How the Story begins

A river ran between two gardens. This is a story from the Qur’an. Allah told our Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, to give people an example, a story with a lesson inside it, about two men. It is in Surah Al-Kahf, the surah many Muslims read every Friday. Let’s listen to the story of the man with two gardens.

Allah gave one of the two men two gardens full of grapevines. All around the edges of the gardens grew tall palm trees, like a green fence. And in between them, there were fields of crops. Imagine bunches of grapes hanging down, purple and green, and dates ripening high up on the palms, and fields swaying gently in the breeze.

Both gardens gave all of their fruit, and never fell short in anything. And right through the middle of them, Allah made a river flow. The water sparkled and splashed, and it kept everything green and fresh. It was the most wonderful pair of gardens you could ever imagine.
