The Garden Owners Who Forgot

6 min · Ages 4–12

A garden of bare leafless trees with empty woven baskets on the ground in pale morning light.

Some people own a beautiful garden heavy with fruit. They plan to pick it all and keep it from the hungry, and they forget to say InshaAllah. The story teaches us to say InshaAllah, to share, and to say sorry and turn to Allah when we are wrong.

The Moral · Forgiveness

The garden owners blamed each other, but that did not bring back a single piece of fruit. Then they said, “We were wrong,” and turned to Allah with hope.

Try today: If you make a mistake today, say “I was wrong” instead of blaming someone.

How the Story begins

The branches were heavy with fruit. This is a true story, and it comes from the Qur’an. Allah tells us about some people who owned a beautiful garden. The Qur’an calls them the companions of the garden. It does not tell us their names, or where they lived. But it tells us what they did, and what they learned. Let’s find out together.

Imagine their garden. Rows and rows of trees, with branches bending low, heavy with fruit. Birds hopping from twig to twig. Sweet smells drifting through the warm air. It was nearly time to pick the fruit, and there was plenty. More than enough for the owners, and more than enough to share with anyone who was hungry.

But the owners of the garden made a plan. They made a promise to each other that they would pick all the fruit very early in the morning. And when they made their promise, they did not say InshaAllah, if Allah wills. They spoke as if everything was up to them, and they forgot that nothing happens unless Allah wills it.
