A hillside cave glowing with warm light at night, a dog lying at its entrance with front legs stretched out.

Some brave young men leave their town so they can keep believing in Allah, and they go to a cave. Allah puts them into a long, deep sleep and takes care of them, with their faithful dog at the entrance. Then Allah wakes them up.

How the Story begins

A dog lay at the mouth of a cave, as if keeping watch. This is true, and the Qur’an tells it. There is a whole chapter of the Qur’an called The Cave, and this is the story it is named after. Allah says that He tells us this story in truth. It is one of His signs. It is about some brave young men, a cave, a very long sleep, and a faithful dog.

Long ago, in a certain town, there lived some young men. The Qur’an tells us that they believed in their Lord, and Allah gave them even more guidance. But the people of their town did not worship Allah alone. They worshipped other things besides Him, and they had no proof at all for what they did. It was not easy to believe in Allah in that town.

But Allah made the hearts of the young men strong and firm. They stood up and said, “Our Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth. We will never call on any god other than Him.” That took a lot of courage! They did not follow everyone else. They followed the truth, even when it was hard.
