6 min · Ages 4–12

A donkey stands by ruined sandy walls, with a round of bread and a clay water jug on the ground.

A traveller sees an empty, ruined town and wonders how Allah could bring it back to life. Allah shows him a great sign, and he says: I know that Allah has power over all things.

The Moral · Gratitude

The traveller saw that nothing is too hard for Allah, who gave him life again. Every morning when we wake up, it is a brand new gift from Allah.

How the Story begins

Clip, clop: a donkey on a long, dusty road. This is a true story, and it comes from the Qur’an. It is about a man, his donkey, and a very, very long time. The Qur’an does not tell us the man’s name, so we will simply call him the traveller. But it tells us something amazing that Allah showed him. Let’s find out what it was.

The traveller was on a journey. He had his donkey with him, and he had some food and something to drink. The road was long and dusty. The sun was warm on his back. Clip, clop, went the donkey’s hooves along the path. On and on they went, past rocks and little bushes, until something appeared in the distance.

It was a town. But it was not a busy town, full of people. It was an empty town, fallen into ruin. The walls had crumbled. The roofs had fallen in. There were no children playing, no one selling bread, no one at all. Everything was silent and still. It looked as if nothing could ever live there again.
