How the Story begins

Is it fair, or not fair? This true story asks that question, and it comes from the Qur’an. It is the story of the Prophet Shu’ayb, peace be upon him. It is a story about markets, and scales, and being fair. Have you ever been to a market, full of people buying and selling? Let’s go back, a very long time ago, to a busy town called Madyan.

Allah had given the people of Madyan so much. Once they had been only a few, and Allah made them many. Allah had given them plenty. Shu’ayb told them: “I can see that you are doing well.” Many scholars explain that the Qur’an also calls them the people of the thicket, a place of thick, green trees. They had everything they needed.

In the market of Madyan, people sold grain, and dates, and all sorts of things. To sell them, they used a measure, like a big scoop, and scales, with a pan on each side. Put the dates on one side, and the weights on the other, and when the two sides balance, you know it is fair. A fair scale is a beautiful thing. Everyone gets exactly what is theirs.
