Hud and the People of 'Ad

6 min · Ages 4–12 · Prophet Hud

Tall stone pillars on desert dunes while a dark cloud and long wind streaks drift in from the side.

Hud, peace be upon him, calls the strong people of 'Ad to thank Allah and stop being proud. Most of them do not listen, and Allah keeps Hud and the believers safe. When we see clouds and wind, we can remember Allah and ask Him for good.

The Moral · Trust in Allah

Hud stood alone in front of a whole strong people and said, “I have put my trust in Allah.” And Allah saved Hud and the believers with him.

How the Story begins

Think of the strongest person you know. This is a true story, and it comes from the Qur’an. It is the story of the Prophet Hud, peace be upon him, and a people called ’Ad. They lived long ago, in a land of great, curving sand dunes. And they were very, very strong. Let’s find out what happened when they forgot who made them strong.

The people of ’Ad came after the people of Nuh. Allah gave them so many blessings. He made them tall and strong, stronger than anyone around them. He gave them herds of animals, and many children, and green gardens, and springs of fresh water. The Qur’an tells us about their tall pillars, and that nothing like them had been made in the land.

But ’Ad forgot to thank Allah. They built tall towers on every high hill, just to show off. They built great strong buildings, as if they were going to live forever. When they were cross with someone, they were harsh and cruel. And they said, proudly: “Who is stronger than us?” But the Qur’an asks: did they not see that Allah, who made them, is far stronger than they are?
