Salih and the She-Camel
7 min · Ages 4–12 · Prophet Salih
The Prophet Salih, peace be upon him, calls his people, the Thamud, to thank and worship Allah. Allah sends a she-camel as a sign, and the people are told to share the water with her, taking turns. The story reminds us to be gentle with animals and to share fairly.
Salih told his people to leave the she-camel in peace and to share the water fairly, one day for her and one day for them. Animals are part of Allah’s creation, so we are gentle with them.
Try today: Be gentle with an animal you see today, like a cat or a bird.
How the Story begins
Picture homes carved right out of a mountain. This is a true story, from the Qur’an. It is the story of the Prophet Salih, peace be upon him, and a very special camel. The Qur’an calls her the she-camel of Allah. A she-camel is a girl camel. Why was she so special? Let’s find out together.
Long ago there lived a people called Thamud. They came after the people of ’Ad. Thamud were very clever builders. They carved their homes right out of the mountains, cutting into the hard rock with great skill. And on the flat plains below, they built fine palaces. Imagine rooms and doorways, carved into the side of a mountain!
Allah gave Thamud so many blessings. They had gardens and springs of fresh water. They had fields full of crops, and palm trees heavy with soft, ripe dates. They had everything they needed. But Thamud did not thank Allah for any of it. Instead, they worshipped other things, and many of them were proud.
