How the Story begins
Many people were hungry in those years. The Qur’an tells us so, and this story is true. It is another part of the story of the Prophet Yusuf, peace be upon him. Yusuf was now in charge of the storehouses of Egypt. Just as Yusuf had said, there were good years, when the grain grew tall, and the people saved it carefully. And then the hard years came.
In the hard years, not much grew, and many people were hungry. But in Egypt, there was food in the storehouses, because Yusuf had planned so well. And one day, a group of travellers came to Egypt from far away, to get grain. They were tired and dusty from their long journey. Can you guess who they were?
They were Yusuf’s brothers! The same brothers who had put him in the well, so many years before. They came in to see Yusuf, to ask for food. The Qur’an tells us that Yusuf knew them straight away. But they did not know him at all. How could they? The little boy from the well was now a grown man, with an important job in Egypt.
