6 min · Ages 7–12 · Prophet Dawud (David)
A small group of believers, led by Talut, trusts Allah when they face a very big army. Among them is Dawud, who would one day become a prophet, peace be upon him. The story teaches us that being few does not matter when Allah is with the patient.
A small group of believers faced an enormous army and said, “Allah is with those who are patient.” They asked Allah to pour patience upon them, and Allah answered them.
Try today: Say, “Our Lord, give me patience,” and take a slow breath.
How the Story begins
Open the Qur’an at Surah Al-Baqarah, and there, among its verses, you will find this story. Every word of it is true. It happened long after the time of the Prophet Musa, peace be upon him. It is about a small group of believers, a very big army, and a man named Dawud, who would one day become a prophet, peace be upon him. It is a story about patience, and about trusting Allah when things look hard.
The Children of Israel were going through a difficult time. The Qur’an tells us that they had been driven out of their homes, and parted from their children. So their leaders went to a prophet who lived among them. The Qur’an does not tell us his name. They said to him, “Send us a king, and we will fight in the way of Allah.” They wanted to win back what they had lost.
Their prophet knew people well. He asked them, “What if fighting is made your duty, and then you do not fight?” “Why would we not fight in the way of Allah,” they said, “when we have been driven out of our homes, and away from our children?” They sounded very sure. But when the time came, the Qur’an tells us that most of them turned away. Only a few stayed true.
