Luqman’s Advice to His Son
7 min · Ages 4–12
Allah gives Luqman wisdom, and he uses it to give his son loving advice. He teaches him to worship Allah alone, to pray, to be patient, and to walk and speak gently, and in the middle of his advice Allah tells us to be good to our parents. It is advice that comes from love.
Allah gave Luqman wisdom and told him to be grateful. Allah also tells us to thank Him and to thank our parents.

How the Story begins
“O my son,” a loving father says. This is a true story, and it comes from the Qur’an. A whole surah of the Qur’an is named after the man in this story. His name was Luqman. Luqman was not a king, and most scholars say he was not a prophet. But Allah gave him something very precious. Allah gave him wisdom. Let’s listen to what a wise man told his son.
What is wisdom? Wisdom is more than knowing lots of facts. Wisdom is knowing what truly matters, and doing the right thing, at the right time, in the right way. The Qur’an tells us that Allah gave Luqman wisdom, and said to him: Be grateful to Allah. And whoever is grateful is grateful for his own good. Allah does not need our thanks. But thanking Allah is good for us.
Luqman had a son. Because he cared about him so much, he wanted to give him the very best gift. Not toys, and not gold, but good advice, to keep in his heart for his whole life. The Qur’an tells us that Luqman spoke to his son while he was teaching him. And again and again, he began with the same tender words: O my son.
