Maryam, peace be upon her, grows up in a quiet prayer room, cared for by the Prophet Zakariyya, peace be upon him. Every time he comes in, he finds food there, and she tells him it is from Allah.
When Zakariyya asked where her food came from, Maryam said, “It is from Allah. Allah gives to whoever He wills, without counting.”

How the Story begins
Food kept coming to Maryam’s prayer room. This story is true, and it comes from the Qur’an. It is the story of Maryam, peace be upon her, and it begins even before she was born. The Qur’an tells us that Allah chose some families above everyone else: the Prophet Adam, and the Prophet Nuh, and the family of the Prophet Ibrahim, peace be upon them all, and the family of ’Imran. Maryam came from the family of ’Imran. Let’s begin.
There was once a woman, the wife of ’Imran, who was going to have a baby. She loved Allah very much. And she made a special promise to Him. She said: My Lord, I promise to You the child inside me, to serve You alone. So accept this from me. You are the One who hears everything, and knows everything.
Think about that promise. A baby is one of the most precious gifts anyone can have. And this mother wanted to give her baby’s whole life to serving Allah. The Qur’an does not tell us everything she was thinking, but we can see that she trusted Allah, and that she wanted the very best for her child. And the very best is to be close to Allah.
