Maryam and Baby ’Isa
7 min · Ages 4–12 · Prophet ’Isa (Jesus)
Maryam, peace be upon her, loves Allah with all her heart. When she is alone and worried, Allah gives her a little stream and ripe dates from a palm tree. Her baby son, the Prophet 'Isa, peace be upon him, speaks while he is still in the cradle.
When baby ’Isa spoke, he said that Allah had made him kind and good to his mother. We can be kind and good to our mothers too.

How the Story begins
Ripe dates fell from a palm tree, by a little stream. This story is true, from the Qur’an. It is the story of Maryam, peace be upon her, and her baby son, the Prophet ’Isa, peace be upon him. Maryam is so special that a whole chapter of the Qur’an is named after her. And she is the only woman the Qur’an calls by her name. Let’s begin.
Maryam loved Allah with all her heart. One day, the Qur’an tells us, she went away from her family to a place towards the east, and she put up a screen, so that she could be alone. Some scholars explain that she wanted a quiet place to worship Allah. It was peaceful and still, just Maryam and her Lord.
Then Allah sent His angel to her. The scholars tell us that this was the angel Jibril. He came to her looking like a man. Maryam did not know who he was, and she said, “I ask the Most Merciful to protect me from you, if you are someone who fears Allah.” Maryam was modest and brave, and the first thing she did was turn to Allah.
