How the Story begins

Out on the open sea, the sails fill with wind. This story is true, and it comes from the Qur’an. It is the story of the Prophet Yunus, peace be upon him. Yunus was one of Allah’s messengers, chosen by Allah to carry His message to people. The Qur’an also gives Yunus a special name. It calls him the man of the fish. Can you guess why? Let’s find out together.

Like every messenger, Yunus called his people to worship Allah alone, the One who made them and everything around them. Being a messenger is a very big job. A messenger keeps calling people to what is good, even when it is hard, and even when people do not listen straight away.

One day, Yunus felt upset with his people, because they would not listen, and he went away. The Qur’an tells us that he left in anger, and the scholars explain that he left before Allah had told him he could go. Yunus was a good and noble prophet. Even so, this was a mistake, and Allah was going to teach him something very important.
