7 min · Ages 7–12 · Prophet Adam

A black crow digging at the soil beside two plain bowls on the ground, with a low sun behind.

Two sons of the Prophet Adam, peace be upon him, each give Allah a gift, and Allah accepts one of them. One brother feels jealous, but the other will not answer harm with harm. It is a serious story for older children, and it teaches us to be happy for others and to stay calm when we are angry.

The Moral · Patience

When his brother was angry, the good brother would not answer harm with harm. Our Prophet said the strong person is the one who controls himself when he is angry.

How the Story begins

Some stories begin with a gift. This one is true, and it comes from the Qur’an. Allah Himself tells us to share it, and He tells it with the truth. It is about two brothers, two sons of the Prophet Adam, peace be upon him. It is a serious story, for older children. It has a sad part. But it also carries a light inside it, a lesson that can help us every single day.

After Adam and his wife came down to the earth, Allah gave them children, and their family grew. The Qur’an does not tell us the names of these two brothers, and what Allah has not told us, we do not need to know. They were brothers. They shared the same mother and the same father. They woke under the same wide sky, and walked on the same green earth.

One day, each of the two brothers made an offering to Allah. An offering is a gift that a person gives, hoping to draw close to Allah. The Qur’an does not tell us what their gifts were, or how they came to know what happened next. But it does tell us this: Allah accepted the gift from one brother, and He did not accept it from the other.
